Report2009

1. Hands-on Video Production Workshop
This workshop will be taught by professional filmmakers. Participants will work in small groups to produce short films. Each group will be supervised by a media instructor learning basic camera techniques, the art of storytelling, and basic editing. This workshop will be offered in collaboration with Downtown Community Television Center (DCTV), teaching youth media for over 30 years. On the last day of the program, each group will present their final video production to friends, family members, and our sponsors.

2. Off-Campus Activities
There will be several field trips to New York City and the suburbs. Students will participate in community services, sports activities, a tour of NYC exploring Japanese book stores and grocery stores, and attending Broadway musicals.
3. Lecture Series from Top Creators
Special lectures will be held by world renowned creators. Lecturers in the past have included:
• Masakazu Kubo, popular Japanese anime producer of “Pokemon”
• Roland Kelts, Japanese pop culture expert and author of “Japanamerica”
• Michael Arias, producer of "Animatrix"
• Shoji Kawamori, animation director and mechanical designer, whose work includes “Ultra Space-Time Fortress Macross”
Lectures may involve TV conferences between Tokyo and New York, by “the first in the world” NTT software experiment, giving participants the opportunity to learn their techniques and philosophies directly
4. Sense of Community
Participants will have a chance to live with other participants from Japan and the United States on our beautiful nature-filled campus. Through various activities, participants will have the opportunity to learn about another culture. Please check out the report from 2009 to learn more about the experiences of last year’s participants.
5. Cross-Cultural Learning and Group Work
Participants will explore Japanese and American history and culture through the eyes of the camera, while working in groups to produce a short video. By actively discussing the filmmaking process, they will learn how to communicate with others and work in teams to develop critical thinking and self-expression.
6. Language Classes
Our native English and Japanese teachers will teach efficiently and effectively in both languages. This will give participants the opportunity to learn a new language and to enjoy themselves in the process. In the past two summers, some of the participants' language skills were incredibly improved by using the new language they learned from their classes through various activities and dorm life. Because of their summer experiences, a number of the local participants had expressed a strong desire to look into study aboard opportunities when they are older to explore their new found interests in the language and culture of Japan.
